"Zone" System for DummiesJeff's Photography Page

This system is guaranteed to improve your photography - or your money back! And, unlike that other Zone System, this one uses only three zones!

Sounds goofy? Okay, so it is. But this simple process will make most of us better photographers. So, here it is...

1.  Take some pictures.

2.  Find an empty table or desk top. Separate it into three "zones."

3.  Label the three tabletop zones:
"I - Really bad pictures - lose these"
"II - Some potential here - work on these later"
"III - Yeah! Nice shots!"

4.  One by one, evaluate your pictures, and put each on the tabletop - in the zone that best fits the photograph.

5.  When the evaluation is complete, look at zone I. Throw away any photos that you see there. Really! On to zone II. You may file zone II photos away for your rainy-day darkroom or PhotoShop (or better still, The GIMP) practice sessions.

6.  Now, zone III! Feel free to perform whatever printing, imaging, and presentation tasks you customarily do to the gems in zone III. Zone III empty? Oh-oh... Back to step 1 for you :(

To maximize the effectiveness of this zone system, add one more step - call it step 4 1/2. This consists of looking at each of the losers, at least long enough to get a hint of what's wrong, and what could have been done differently.

Happy Shooting!
